About Pelican Lagoon
Pelican Lagoon is a unique seawater lagoon in Kangaroo Island, South Australia. This beautiful tidal inlet of water is located on the north coast of the Island, about 19 kilometres south east of Kingscote. The lagoon was named by Matthew Flinders in1802 after the large population of pelicans present in its waters and adjoining shorelines. Fishing in its waters has been restricted due to the important role it plays as fishery hatchery.
Since 2012, the Pelican Lagoon Sanctuary Zone has been within Encounter Marine Park. The lagoon is probably the oldest marine protected area in South Australia, having been protected since 1914 and is currently managed by National Parks South Australia.
With the Lagoon are about 5 small islands. It is full of marine life, providing an amazing and unique experience for snorkelling and kayaking, and walks along the coast.
